The Natural Selection Denim collection is inspired by the uniforms of men working on the railroad, from officers to labourers. Hailing from London's Shoreditch, Natural Selection Denim is the result of the hands of a craftsman, the eye of a designer, and the heart of an artist, Paul Young.

With features such as high quality Japanese denim interwoven with Zimbabwean cotton, the attention to detail is truly outstanding. One of the brands sources of inspiration is to embrace the heritage that denim and work wear has. These references are present in details such as the hidden rivets, top centre button stitch and the selvedge fabrics woven traditionally by hand.

Three main symbols in the leather patch sybolize the craftsmanship behind their work....

The Penny Farthing - a great contribution to the industrial revolution that influenced the work wear design element of the brand.

The Pheasant - a British bird, with distinctive colouring & intricate patterned feather detail that represents the detail, innovation & fabric selections so important to the brand.

The Ornate Floral design - This can be found engraved on the side of a shotgun barrel handmade in England.

The idea the guys wanted to portray in the name of the brand was to suggest the evolution process - referencing the evolution of denim as a fabric, from a raw/ dry indigo, right through to an aged/ damaged finish- whether naturally by the user or artificially by hand - it is an evolutionary process.

The brand is based in the UK but uses Japanese Denim from the Okayama region and an Italian Denim Mill in the production process.The guys have a studio and showroom in Shoreditch London. This is where the entire process happens from research and planning, development and production then to sales.

They are a small family and have a hands on approach at every stage of the process- a little like us here at Angus Black...

'The coming collection ‘one and one’ is about us exploring our classic pieces and trying to perfect them beyond their already classic nature. We’ve used subtle detailing, paid a lot of attention to the fabrications and how they’re treated and used colours that are as timeless as they are current on top of this we have some pieces that are really new to us and that have pushed us harder at the design table then ever before hence one classic and one new piece.'

Friday night Brisbane was graced for the first time with one of the greatest living hip hop producers of the genre’s brief history, Pete Rock. His two hour set at Alhambra was a virtual voyage of some of the most influential artists and groups of the last 20 years. With samplings from a Tribe Called Quest, Q-tip, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Gang Starr, Slum Village and J dilla, it was an unparalleled playlist. If you weren’t there you’ll just have to imagine the hype and hysteria in the front row when T.R.O.Y came on.

Meet the talented Nick Chalmers....

By teaming intricate and detailed ink-work on wood along with loosely pained canvases and short films, Nicholas Chalmers presents quirky angles on his social views and situations. His humorous yet didactic artworks aim to engage, entertain and provoke viewers.

Nicholas completed a Diploma in Graphic Design, and since then he has been traveling around the globe featuring his art in several group shows.

His latest project is with Rhythm Clothing designing the Men's wovens offerings..

It's the first time Angus Black has represented a surf label in store so in light of this we thought we'd ask Nick about a few of his firsts...

First crush... Either a lady that worked at the local swimming pool my parents would go to or my year 3 teachers daughter. She was pretty cute.

First album you flogged...Nirvana Unplugged. Got it from Cash Converters. Either that or my cassette of the Skyhooks.

First car..Used to borrow my mums Subaru Liberty wagon. Was great for going surfing on the weekend with my mates.

First hangover...16 years old in a small Samoan village after a night on Vodka Cruisers. Had no idea why I had a headache the next day.

First travel destination...U.S.A. I guess. I was quite young. Only thing I remember is going to Alcatraz prison and putting on the headphones to do the cassette tape tour guide and a pensioner must have been listening to it before me because it was cranked to full volume and when I hit play it scared the life out of me. I was already freaking that I was in a prison.

First tube.. Burleigh rock break. I saw my friends dad stick his arm in the wave and get a barrel so I did the same thing on my next wave and pulled it off. They put it on the local news in the surf report that night. I was so stoked.

Designer Stephen 'Kristo' Christopherson was inspired to found ATG in 2009 after several years working at renowned art gallery China Heights in Sydney.

The label at its conception was a one off confluence of fashion and art.

Taking a unique approach to design, A.T.G. began with Kristo’s reinvention and appropriation of detailed floral prints applying them to an all mens’ range of high-end street wear.

Simon Ponnusamy has invented a new cool for his latest AM Eyewear collection, ‘Riviera Rebellion’, which draws upon his love of all things yesteryear and fuses it with the rebelliousness of youth culture.

Each new collection is reflective of Ponnusamy’s many sources of inspiration. From his fast-paced life traveling and mingling with some of the worlds biggest rock stars to his mother’s collection of vintage sunglasses and photos from her days in the fashion industry.

Riviera Rebellion: they’re the frames you would be wearing if you found yourself on an early era mahogany speedboat, redlining from the polizia in the Italian Riviera… without a care!

AM Eyewear has grown its reputation both in Australia and internationally through its commitment to cutting edge designs crafted from the highest quality materials.Each frame is individually crafted for up to 14 hours using the cutting edge material Mazzachelli acetate rather than the mass produced mould injected plastics.The malleable qualities of this product ensures AM Eyewear can be shaped to provide a truly bespoke fit...not possible to find with other sunglasses.

A high-grade, anti-irritant, nickel-free plated stainless steel is used for all their metal frames thereby protecting the wearer from contact skin irritation. Then, depending on the requirement of the individual frame, AM use either Italian Tecno ‘Seven Teeth Fixed’ hinges or German OBE spring-loaded hinges to ensure that the arms will never sag.

Using nothing but the best “Military Grade” LYX Polyamide Nylon ensures all AM Eyewear lenses are multi- superior…they are lightweight, scratch, heat and chemical resistant and have a high UV protection rating. They then go one step further by applying a layer of anti-reflective coating, which reduces ‘back glare’ from hitting the eye… increasing the wearers comfort and long-term eye health.

“I work in the old, organic way,” says Ponnusamy.

"I design using only a pad and pencil in order to feel each line of the frame. It takes a lot longer than using a computer because I’m forever erasing and then remarking the page until I get it right. But I just love the way this allows the frame to slowly come alive as I get to know every line intimately."

The artisan approach continues beyond Ponnusamy who engages master craftsmen to carve each sample out of a solid piece of acetate much in the same way an old sculptor whittles wood.

Ever since the first five-frame collection debuted in 2003 Ponnusamy has been unwavering in his desire to combine quality with individuality.

The evolution of each AM Eyewear frame continues well beyond the workshop. Once out of the box the Italian acetate frames mold to the wearers face - much in the same way as a bespoke pair of leather boots.

“People make these frames,” says Ponnusamy. “They are designed by hand, crafted by hand, polished by hand. They are packed by hand and they are only ever complete once you have worn them.”

Khaki and canvas is the cradle of denim. We decided to go looking for our own denim origin.

We found it on the Swedish west coast on a small

archipelago island called Gullholmen.

We could confirm the relationship between indigo, khaki and

the local hickory stripe and the black cutters

that sailed from here to all over the world.

This visit was the inspiration and source to what we now present

Nailing a healthy look comes from grooming your entire body: from your hair to your toes. So, a good manicure is essential to achieving an overall healthy look. More and more men are frequently in spas and salons to have their nails manicured. Unkempt hands are a turn-off to anyone . . . an employer, a significant other, a stranger.

1.Hands and nails must be clean. Using a nail brush really gets the dirt. Lemon juice makes a good cleaner. Cut a lemon in half and twist each finger in it to clean each nail.

2.Trim each nail to a practical length.

3.Using an emery board, file any rough edges on your nails.

4.Dry, ragged cuticles should be softened and removed or pushed back. There is a tool for this if you have a manicure set. Overbearing cuticles are a major turn-off.

5.Buff your nails.

An interview between GQ and Alvin from Saint Augustine Academy:

Saint Augustine Academy was the standout menswear show at this year’s Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. The show was a mélange of western-detailing and biker-chic. Luxurious accents, leather tassels and quality tailoring gave the show an international aesthetic. I caught up with Saint Augustine Academy designer, Alvin Manalo, after the show.

Alex Simpson: What was the inspiration for the show this year?

Alvin Manalo: The collection is called Love and Haight, so it’s really a reference to San Francisco in the late 60s’ and the graduation of the Beat Poets into hippies. The narrative in the show is greatly inspired by the story in Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, which is about the Merry Pranksters. They were closely associated with the Hells Angels, famously almost kidnapped the Rolling Stones and then fled into Mexico to escape the FBI and their pending drug charges. So the collection has a wild west feel with paisley, the safari look of the late 60s’ and motorcycle-gang-inspired looks. In terms of styling, I was inspired by Annie Leibovitz’s curation of images from Rolling Stone magazine in Shooting Stars.

AS: The western theme was quite prominent at the Milan shows this year, do you take any inspiration from overseas trends?

AM: I always feel that there is kind of a zeitgeist connecting what people are thinking in the design world. I don’t follow Milan specifically, but I do follow the shows in Paris. Although the hat trend was definitely western-inspired, the leather fringing was more from motorcycle culture rather than western-inspired. The two are kind of easily entangled.

AS: How many menswear looks did you edit out.

AM: I probably edited about 25 looks down to 19. I guess with us, because people know us as menswear, we wanted to focus on the womenswear a little more this year.

AS: When will everything from the show be in store?

AM: It should be in store around September.

AS: What do you think of Australian menswear today?

AM: We are getting slightly less commercial, and I am a fan of some of the newer brands, such as Three Over One, which you obviously know, as GQ nominated them as menswear designer of the year. There are some really great new brands from Melbourne, like From Britten, which seems to have a very international aesthetic.

AS: Do you think it’s important for Australian brands to have an international aesthetic, or should they stand their own ground and have a uniquely Australian voice?

AM: What I try to showcase in Saint Augustine Academy, is that you can be both. Australia should be playing with international trends. The US men’s market has recently become really conservative. So there’s no reason why we can’t move into the international stage. When I’m overseas, people actually think that we’re the ones that are ahead because they see us as one season ahead, rather than one season behind. In New York, a lot of people in the fashion industry see Australia as the next big thing. The US is actually quite a conservative market, so they see us as edgy.

AS: Where do you export to overseas?

AM: We have about ten stockists in the US, we’ve got stockists in Singapore, in Taiwan, in Shanghai, in Tokyo, we haven’t touched Europe yet but I feel like that will be our biggest market given our aesthetic.
